Presentation Title:

Best of contact dermato-allergology 2023

Abstract

Epicutaneous testing, beside some non-invasive techniques, is the key of contact dermato-allergology. In the present report, data from the literature are presented regarding the correct interpretation of the results of epicutaneous tests, some aspects specific to the COVID-19 pandemic, occupational dermato-allergology, and top diagnostic techniques used in this field. The relevance of positive tests to lanolin allergy indicators, the increase of the incidence of hand eczema in children in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, new occupational allergens from smartphone screen protectors, epoxy components, cosmetic adhesives, intermediates used in the manufacture of certain drugs, beside optical coherence tomography, molecular signature analysis, experimental reproduction of work in wet environment, are tackled in the studied publications. In conclusion, these papers, published in Contact Dermatis Journal, demonstrate: the need to test patients' own products in the case of a suspicion of lanolin allergy; the increase of severity of hand eczema in children, especially in atopic ones, during the recent pandemic; the utility of testing individual ingredients in allergies to smartphone screen protectors; the importance of the airborne way, working surfaces and contaminated protective equipment in the occurrence of allergic contact dermatitis to epoxy components; significantly increased incidence of allergic reactions to cosmetic adhesives in beauticians; skin sensitizing potential of one of the intermediates used in the pharmaceutical industry; the utility of non-invasive diagnostic techniques for the experimental deepening of reactions to epicutaneous tests; possible damage to the immunological and skin bioengineering parameters of the epidermis through frequent hand washing in healthcare workers.
