Nursing and Disability: Caring for Self and for Others
Abstract
Approaches
to healthcare vary among practitioners, patients, and family member or friends.
This variety exposes both potentially supportive interventions and potentially
conflicting agendas. Nursing professionals, patients, and family or friends
each have responsibilities for patient care. When any of these persons is
disabled the dynamics of healthcare encounters may be clouded by
misunderstanding the needs, expectations, and the challenges that disability
brings to healthcare encounters. The Social Model of Disability is the lens
through which caring for self and for others will be examined.
