King Abdulaziz Specialist Hospital, Saudi ArabiaTitle: Assessing the risk factors of fall among hospitalized adult patients
Abstract
Patient’s safety is a major concern of health care
institutions and huge effort are giving to maintain
it. However, many hospitalized patients are at risk
of experiencing some safety events. Fall is one of
the major safety Incidence the hospitals focus on.
Fall Incidence and assessment of its risk have
been utilized in many health care institutions as
key indicators of quality of care. Falls have been
widely observed among admitted patients that
substantially influence their recovery from illness.
contribute to their prolonged hospital stay and
increased healthcare costs. Furthermore, patients'
fall incidents have proved to be quite costly due to
the adverse consequences of fall-related injuries
Identifying, analyzing the risk factors of falls
among adult patients during hospitalization in the
relevant research and assessing the falls risk
factors among hospitalized adult patients in King
Abdulaziz Specialist Hospital at Taif, Saudi
Arabia were the focus of the study. Through
scoping review of the relevant research findings of
the risk factors of falls among hospitalized adult
patients included 11 relevant studies that were
reviewed critically to identify the potential factors
increasing patient falls risk. These studies
published between 2013-2019 were recruited from
authentic databases like MEDLINE, PubMed,
CINAHL, and EBSCO. In Addition to a
retrospective study for 90 fall incident reports and
patients’ medical records from 2016 to 2019. The review and study revealed different factors
contribute to increased risk of falls among
hospitalized patients like the age and gender of
patients, educational level, marital status, chronic
disease, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal
disease and cognitive impairments. psychotropic
and narcotic drugs, and environmental factors.
Falls are attributable to both intrinsic and extrinsic
factors during hospitalization. Identifying the
significant factors leading to falling can help
nurses and other healthcare staff to develop
preventive strategies to alleviate these falls'
physical, psychological, economic and social
consequences.
