Presentation Title:

Banking Dental stem cells: An investment in future oral & systemic healthcare

Abstract

Emerging research highlights a bidirectional relationship between oral and systemic health, with chronic oral diseases such as periodontitis and endodontic infections contributing to the pathogenesis and progression of systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and neurodegenerative disorders. As the field of regenerative medicine evolves, stem cell research has revolutionized modern medicine, offering new pathways for tissue regeneration, personalized therapies, and disease modeling.

Among the various sources of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), dental stem cells derived from exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED), dental pulp (DPSCs), and periodontal ligament (PDLSCs) have gained significant attention. These cells are easily accessible and possess the ability to differentiate into various cell types, making them promising tool not only for oral tissue regeneration but also for broader systemic applications. Their immunomodulatory properties further enhance their potential in treating inflammatory and degenerative diseases.

Dental stem cell banking embodies a transformative step in personalized regenerative medicine, holding significant promise for future oral and systemic health interventions. Cryopreserving these cells at an early age represents a proactive investment in future autologous regenerative therapies that extend beyond dental care to include multi-organ repair and disease management.

As personalized medicine reshapes healthcare, it is imperative for healthcare providers to acquire new competencies in emerging biotechnologies. Nurses, often serves as frontline caregivers and patient educators, play a vital role in translating scientific advancements into patient-centered care.

This talk will addresses the dual importance of dental stem cell banking in regenerative medicine and the need of Integrating biobanking science into nursing and healthcare education, thereby equipping  today’s healthcare professionals with knowledge of tomorrow’s therapies, and  pave the way for a more personalized, regenerative, and patient-centered future in medicine.
