Knowledge, practice and perception of nursing professionals regarding telenursing as a strategy for continuity of care

Abstract

Introduction: Telenursing is the art of caring through the use of information and communication technologies. It ensures the right to health protection and provides quality care in a comprehensive, timely, continuous, safe, educational manner, centered on the user, family, group, and community.

Objective: To determine the knowledge, practice, and perception of nursing professionals regarding telenursing as a strategy for continuity of care for users discharged from the hospital.

Materials and Methods: A descriptive crosssectional study was conducted with a nonprobabilistic sample of 96 nursing professionals. A self-administered survey was applied via Google Forms during May 2021. Ethical considerations were respected at all times.

Results: 80% of participants were female; most belonged to the age group 46 to 55 years. Academic degrees included: 55% bachelor's in nursing, 25%specialization, 15% master's, and 5% doctorate. 100% use mobile phones; 48% know about telemedicine, 29% about telehealth, and 23% about
telenursing. 68% indicated that using electronic devices allows direct contact with users. Regarding the perception of telenursing as a continuity of care
strategy: 67% totally agreed that ICTs are a functional tool for care continuity.

Conclusion: Nursing professionals possess knowledge about ICTs, practice their use, and perceive telenursing positively as a continuity of care strategy.
