Title: Exploration of experiences of patients with traumatic paraplegia

Abstract

Background: Traumatic paraplegia is a devastating problem for related individuals and drastically influence on persons' physiology. Knowing the experiences about these patients by individuals who are caring them is very important to enhance the recovery. Many studies were conducted by developed countries, developing countries. This study was conducted due to a few literatures found in Sri Lanka. 
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the experience of patients with traumatic paraplegic patients in the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL), Colombo. 
Methods: Quantitative non experimental descriptive design was used in this research. Study was done in NHSL. 20 – 65 age ranged 16 male patients were selected purposively for this phenomenological study. Using semi structured interviews data collected according to the thematic analysis during a month. Data analyzed was obtained under the thematic analysis method. 
Findings: Five themes were derived from the finding as life is a mess, body frustration, adapting to a new condition, relationship with others and livelihood. 
Conclusion: Depression, fear, stress, lack of autonomy, worry, coping strategy and lost of future plans were the psychological.

Alahapperumage Nayana Damayanthi Charles has completed her Diploma in Nursing from the College of Nursing, Sri Lanka, she received her Bachelor of Nursing (honours) from the Open University of Sri Lanka, Post graduate certificate of Health Services and Management of University of Chester, United Kingdom. As her professional life, she worked in Accident and Orthopaedic Services Accident Service Out Patients Department, Accident and Orthopaedic Intensive Care Unit for 10 years in Sri Lanka. Currently serves as a Registered Nurse in Fountain Care Management in Health and Social care in United Kingdom.
