Upto-datenesses in occupational Dermato-Allergology 2024

Abstract

Occupational dermatology can be practiced only interdisciplinary; it cannot be dissociated neither from occupational medicine nor from contact dermato-allergology. The exposure reviews briefly five of the papers in the field of occupational dermatology published in the official publication of the European Society of Contact Dermatitis (ESCD). Assessment of the future impact of exposed people to acrylates from manicure materials, the relevance of Dimethyl-thiocarbamylbenzothiazolesulfide (DMTBS) and diethyl-thiocarbamyl-benzothiazolesulfide (DETBS) as markers of contact allergy to rubber additives, the high prevalence of contact dermatitis among hairdressers which is mainly due to the release of nickel in hairdressing tools, the relevance of semi-open test for the diagnosis of contact allergy to gloves, and the effect of certain creams applied before occlusion by gloves represent the subject of analysed papers. In our opinion, the results of these articles demonstrated: acrylate sensitization triggered by a purely cosmetic procedure can have a long-term impact on the lives of patients, who should avoid acrylates from all potential sources; a sensitization by patch test to DMTBS, with cross-reactivity with other allergens, has been proven, with a strong suspicion that even small amounts of DMTBS in consumer products could cause sensitization; hairdressers’ tools must be systematically tested in patients sensitized to nickel by the qualitative dimethylglyoxime (DMG) test, and metals must also be systematically tested, by patch, in beauticians and in patients suffering from scalp dermatitis; some protective creams (PCs) could have a long-term negative effect on the function of the skin barrier, so it would seem preferable to apply the PC after wearing the glove and not before.
