Abstract
Population aging has become one of today's major
transformations, with demographic and
epidemiological consequences. The fundamental
pillars of contemporary life have been affected,
such as the economy and health. Consequently, the
repercussions of the individual's health status have
a great impact on the social sphere of the
individual. The vulnerability caused by aging
associated with an unhealthy lifestyle exposes the
elderly to the onset of non-transmissible chronic
diseases, which increases the likelihood of hospital
admissions, a large part of which are in Intensive
Care Units (ICU). One of the main complications
of elderly admissions to the ICU is delirium, which
is an acute and fluctuating disturbance of
consciousness and cognition that develops over a
short period of time, hours or days. The care of the
elderly patient requires specific qualification of
health professionals, due to its complexity, often
due to its comorbidities and the need for continuous
surveillance. The hospitalization of the elderly in
the ICU involves a mix of feelings and needs,
mainly due to the distance from their support
network. Complex and differentiated care is the
essence of dignified nursing care to the
hospitalized elderly, breaking the prejudices and
stereotypes related to this population and stimulating human civility. Nurses' knowledge
about delirium is necessary to quickly detect any
signs or symptoms, and to manage the care of this
patient, reducing the negative clinical outcomes
related to delirium such as self extubation, catheter
removal, prolonged hospital stay, increased
mortality and inability to perform activities of daily
living, and long-term cognitive impairment. Thus,
it was necessary to systematically explore the
literature to identify the nursing care provided to
elderly patients with delirium admitted to intensive
care units to manage delirium.
