Title: Molecular epidemiology of HBV based on subtipy angenotipy in Timor-Leste

Abstract

Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a serious health problem in Timor-Leste, however data on its prevalence is still very limited. According to some reports, the prevalence of HBsAg in general population in Timor-Leste ranges from 6.9% to 12.4%. Previous research on blood donors in the city of Dili also indicated the biodiversity of the HBV genotype and HBsAg subtype.
Aim: This study aimed to elucidate the recent mapping out the distribution of HBV genotypes and HBsAg subtypes in the general population in Timor-Leste.
Method: This study was conducted using a cross sectional design to analyze HBV genotype distributions and HBsAg subtypes.
Results: The results revealed that 69 of 683 subjects from six Municipalities (Districts) in Timor Leste were HBsAg positives. genotype C was predominant (72.8%), followed by genotype B (25.7%) and genotype A (1.5%). All of the main HBsAg subtypes were found in Timor-Leste i.e. adr subtype (71.2%), followed by ayw subtype (24.2%), adw subtype (3,1%), and ayr subtype (1.5%).
Conclusions: It was concluded that sub genotype C2 and subtype adr were predominant.
