Abstract
Post-stroke urinary incontinence (UI) is one of the
sequelae of stroke that affects the patient's entire
life (physically, psychologically, socially, and
spiritually). This study aims to develop and
implement a nursing care model based on the
theory of human becoming and self-care deficit
theory of nursing. This study was divided into two
phases. First phase begins with conducted
qualitative research (case study), involved 18
informants, then continued with model
development. The results of the first phase of the
study obtained five themes from the results of indepth interviews so that a post-stroke UI nursing
care model was produced along with a model
intervention guide, modules for patients and
nurses. The second phase involved implementing
the course. This model was implemented with five
activities for eight weeks. The first activity was carried
out at the hospital in the form of health education to
patients and caregivers about post-stroke UI. The
second activity was also carried out at the hospital and
continued at the patient's home, in the form of skills
training that needs to be given in the management of
post-stroke UI including bladder retraining exercises,
pelvic floor muscle exercises, joint range of motion
exercises, encouraging positive thinking, and
controlling emotions. The third activity was in the form
of assistance in implementing the skills that have been
taught, this can be done at the patient's home. The fourth
activity was in the form of monitoring and evaluation,
which can be done through home visits and telephone calls. The fifth activity was in the form of follow-up.
The conclusion of the research is that nursing care
model based on the theory of human becoming and
self-care deficit theory of nursing was helpful in
improving the patients' and caregivers’
competence.
